Simeon Care

Local Befrienders

Volunteer Befrienders generally come from the local area, and volunteer for a few hours a week at Simeon to gain experience in supporting older people, and an insight into what makes daily life meaningful for them, or to contribute their time to benefit the community.

The role of the Volunteer Befriender is to provide companionship for residents and support them in participating in activities such as playing games, singing and making music, or simply having a cup of tea and a chat.

Residents may wish to go for a walk or out to enjoy the garden. Volunteer Befrienders do not assist with personal care for the residents.

Many volunteers will help over a long period of time, helping to build trust and a relationship. People who need guidance and help come from all walks of life and ages.

To be a local Volunteer Befriender at Simeon you must be at least 16 years old, and it is essential to have basic English language skills.

Some previous experience of working or volunteering with vulnerable people would be an advantage but is not essential.

You should have a compassionate and caring nature, be helpful, and willing to share your skills, and talents to enrich the lives of others. You must be interested in people, our residents have plenty of fascinating stories to tell about their lives, and there is so much to learn from talking and listening to them.

Volunteer Befrienders at Simeon are required to apply for membership of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme and undergo a PVG check.
