Questions with a Resident - Robin

2 min read

Meet Robin. An accomplished artist, Robin has had a varied and fascinating life, from joining the Merchant Navy in 1962 to developing his passion for art and photography. His love of art is still a big part of his life today, and with support from the team at Simeon, Robin attends a weekly art class outside of the home.

We spoke with Robin to find out more about his time in the Merchant Navy, what he enjoys about life at Simeon, and how he continues to pursue the things he loves.

What are some of your favourite memories from your time in the Merchant Navy?

I really enjoyed travelling, especially visiting Niagara Falls while we were docked at Buffalo Port. I took some lovely photos there.

I also have fond memories of sneaking beers into my bunk with my cabin mate!

You’re a keen artist and photographer. What is it about art and photography that you enjoy?

I used to enjoy travelling to different locations, taking photos of landscapes and then painting them.

I find painting relaxing and enjoyable, although it can also be hard work. It’s a good distraction and helps take my mind off things.

Do you have a favourite piece of artwork that you’ve created?

Some of my favourite pieces include a painting of a Spanish Galleon wrecked on the Irish Coast in 1588, Cairnlee House, just along from Simeon, and Kildrummy Castle near Alford.

  • Spanish Galleon
  • Kildrumy Castle

How have the team at Simeon supported you to continue doing the things you enjoy, like attending your weekly art class?

The team at Simeon take me to and from my weekly art class and help me purchase the art supplies I need. I also have an art station in the Craft Room, and I’m able to display my artwork throughout the home.

Sometimes, when there are special events and fairs, I also have a stall where I can sell my artwork.

What do you enjoy most about life at Simeon?

I enjoy attending my weekly art classes, feeding the birds in the patio area outside my room and getting to know the other residents.

And, of course, my nightly dram!

Finally, what's one piece of advice or wisdom you'd like to pass on to younger generations?

Always do the things that you enjoy. Travel the world as much as possible and experience new things.
