Meet Peter, Operations Lead

Peter John has been part of the Simeon community for more than two decades, originally joining as a volunteer. Today, having completed a raft of qualifications and progressing through a variety of roles, he is Operations Lead responsible for ensuring Simeon runs smoothly.

We spoke to Peter about his career journey, what makes Simeon so special, and his advice for anyone considering volunteering.

How long have you been at Simeon and what was your first role?

After graduating with a degree in English Language and Literature in India, I came to Simeon in 2004. I had initially volunteered at Camphill School Aberdeen for three months, but after being introduced to Simeon by a friend, I knew it was where I wanted to be.

I spent a year as a volunteer care worker before deciding I wanted to work at Simeon full-time. While working here, I studied for a BA in Curative Education at the University of Aberdeen, which took four years to complete.

How has your role progressed since then?

As part of my continuous professional development, I completed an SVQ4 in Management and Leadership, which included evidence-based practice. Alongside the training I received at Simeon, this qualification enabled me to take on the role of Team Leader and continue progressing within the organisation.

What is your role now, and what does a typical day look like?

I'm now Operations Lead and hold the registered manager role for the service, meaning I’m responsible for day-to-day service delivery.

My day always starts with a walk around the home, speaking with staff from different departments to identify any maintenance, health and safety, or wellbeing issues.

While much of my role involves planning, problem-solving and supporting the team, one of the things I value most is spending time with our residents and their families. I make sure I regularly sit down for a cup of tea and a catch-up with residents and families. Thanks to my previous experience in care, I'm also happy to step in and support the team whenever it’s needed.

What stands out to you most about Simeon?

Simeon feels like a sanctuary. There's a sense of comfort and calm as soon as you walk through the door.

Having lived at Simeon for seven years during the early 2000s, when many volunteers and co-workers lived on site as part of the home's shared-life community ethos, I feel a real sense of belonging and purpose here. The richness of that culture and sense of community can still be felt throughout the home today, creating an environment where people feel safe, valued and comfortable. For residents, that means receiving high-quality, compassionate care in a place that feels genuinely like home. Simeon is somewhere they are known as individuals, supported with dignity, and surrounded by warmth, familiarity and meaningful relationships.

What's the most rewarding moment you've had?

It's a privilege to be trusted by the families and loved ones of our residents. You truly become part of their extended family.

Seeing volunteers grow during their time at Simeon is also incredibly rewarding.

I mentor many of our volunteers, who often arrive feeling shy and uncertain but leave with greater confidence and a strong sense of purpose. We have an active volunteer programme, with people joining us from across the UK and internationally to support our work for a year before moving on to full-time employment or further opportunities after completing their studies.

Over the past few years, we've supported around 10 volunteers to join Simeon as permanent members of staff.

What advice would you give someone who's thinking about volunteering?

Give and take. We believe everyone has something valuable to contribute, and you'll gain so much in return. You'll receive full training in holistic care and develop skills that will stay with you for life.

If you're coming from outside the UK, Simeon can also support you with developing your English language skills and confidence.

And, of course, I think Scotland is the best place in the world, so everyone should visit at least once!

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy spending time with my family. I have three boys and we love travelling together.

Recently, one of my sons and I spent five days interrailing across Europe, visiting Austria and Switzerland, both of which were beautiful. I also love exploring Scotland's islands whenever I get the chance.

I'm also a keen coin and stamp collector.
