What is anthroposophic medicine and why is it used at Simeon?

At Simeon, residents can access anthroposophic medicine alongside conventional healthcare, something offered by only a handful of care homes in the UK. But what is anthroposophic medicine, what does that look like in practice, and how do we combine the two to create a personalised, holistic approach for our residents?
Â
What is anthroposophic medicine?
Anthroposophic medicine is a gentle, holistic approach to healthcare that works alongside conventional medicine. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, it considers the whole person, including their physical health, emotional wellbeing and overall quality of life.
Developed over 100 years ago, anthroposophic medicine views every person as having four interconnected aspects: the physical body, the life or etheric body, the astral body, which relates to feelings and perceptions, and the individual 'I' or ego, which reflects each person's unique identity and sense of self. By recognising the relationship between these aspects, anthroposophic medicine aims to support health and wellbeing in a balanced and meaningful way.
It uses a combination of natural-based therapies, plant and mineral preparations, and supportive treatments, always prescribed by specially trained doctors, to gently support the body's own healing processes.

A holistic approach at Simeon
At Simeon, anthroposophic medicine forms part of a wider, integrated approach to care rather than something separate from it. As part of the Camphill Movement, Simeon follows a philosophy that values each resident as an individual and supports their physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing.
Anthroposophic treatments are always used alongside conventional medical care, with residents supported to take an active role in decisions about their wellbeing wherever possible. The aim is not to replace conventional medicine, but to combine the strengths of both approaches to provide personalised care that meets each person's individual needs.
Â
How it works in practice
In practice, this often means beginning with the gentlest and least invasive options where it is appropriate to do so. For example, if a resident is struggling with sleep, anxiety or restlessness, they may be offered calming anthroposophic approaches such as a warm lavender footbath or plant-based preparations like Avena sativa (oat-based drops), prescribed by specially trained doctors. These treatments can be comforting, familiar and well tolerated.
If these approaches are not enough on their own, conventional medications are then considered and used when needed. The aim is never to choose one system over another, but to use both thoughtfully and responsibly in the best interests of the resident.

Therapeutic approaches at Simeon
Anthroposophic care is about more than medicine. It also includes therapeutic approaches that support comfort, wellbeing and quality of life. At Simeon, these may include:
Einreibung, a rhythmical massage designed to promote relaxation and wellbeing.
External applications, such as warm or cool compresses to provide comfort and support healing.
Therapeutic baths, calf soaks and foot soaks, often using natural scents such as lavender to encourage relaxation or rosemary to create a more invigorating effect on the mind and body.
Art and music therapy, helping residents express themselves creatively and engage with meaningful activities.
Meaningful daily routines and a connection with nature, including direct access to outdoor spaces, walks in Simeon's mature gardens, and freshly cut flowers displayed throughout the home to create a calm, welcoming environment.

Supporting different aspects of care
The same balanced approach is reflected across many aspects of everyday care. For skin health, anthroposophic ointments may be used alongside regular repositioning, pressure area care and a nourishing, home-cooked diet to support the skin's natural resilience. When residents are more prone to urinary tract infections, preventative support such as cranberry-based supplements or probiotic preparations may be used under clinical guidance to help reduce risk and maintain comfort.
Â
Care centred around each resident
For residents, this means care that is compassionate, personalised and responsive. Whether someone benefits from conventional medicine, anthroposophic treatments, or a combination of both, our aim is always the same: to help each person live as comfortably and meaningfully as possible.
By bringing together conventional healthcare with anthroposophic medicine and therapeutic approaches, Simeon creates an environment where residents are supported not only with their physical health, but also their emotional wellbeing, individuality and everyday quality of life.
